Caliche Rum Review
Type: Rum
Color: Clear
Country: Puerto Rico
Caliche Rum is a new rum that was launched this Summer in a joint venture between nightlife entrepreneur Rande Gerber and Roberto Serralles, a Sixth Generation Rum Distiller whose family produces rums including Don Q. What makes Caliche is unique is that it is aged up to 5 years (most white rums are not aged), and is a blend of 4 rums. It is then distilled 5 times and treated with a special charcoal blend. The result is a taste that you won’t forget!
On the nose I got beautiful notes of citrus, vanilla and caramel. In swirling Caliche around in my glass it showed strong body – I was definitely excited to get my first taste.
Upon taking my first sip I understood why Caliche is going with the “Super Premium” classification. Caliche Rum is complex but very clean. I got a nice balance of those vanilla and caramel flavors with an underlying oak sweetness. The texture is rich and velvety thus coating my mouth in a manner that made me want another glass.
I also tried Caliche in a cocktail and the results were just as strong. Here are two cocktails that will impress your Thanksgiving dinner guests!
CALI COCO
- 2 oz Caliche Rum
- 1 oz Don Q Coco Rum
- 1 oz Coconut Water
- (Vita Coco and Zico work best)
- ¼ oz Agave Nectar
- Garnish: Dry Coconut Flakes
Combine all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice and shake until chilled. Strain into an ice filled rocks glass. Add garnish.
CALI DAIQUIRI
- 1 oz Fresh Limes
- ¼ oz Agave Nectar
- 1 Fresh Strawberry
- Top with Soda Water
- Garnish: Strawberry
In a mixing glass, lightly muddle the strawberry. Add the remaining ingredients, fill with ice and shake until well chilled. Strain into an ice filled rocks glass and garnish.
Hands down Caliche Rum is a bottle that you should get familiar with if you are a Rum lover or just like an old fashion good cocktail. Thank me later. Cheers!
