Cigars are tricky sometimes. All the cigars that I have smoked that were categorized as full-bodied always fell short in my opinion. With the Cain Nub Habano there was no denying its power. Made by Sam Leccia who created the popular concept Nub series, Sam originally introduced the Cain in 2009. I have always wanted to try the Cain but I have missed it during my travels. Recently I saw that Sam started producing the Cain in a Nub form and I couldn’t resist.

Cain cigars are made with straight ligero which is known for providing a real robust full smoke. The reason for this is the ligero leaf comes from the very top of the tobacco plant and therefore gets the most sun, nutrients, flavor and nicotine content. The trick to make this type of tobacco enjoyable, in this instance is to triple ferment it. The result is a very powerful but smooth smoke.

The Cain Nub Habano sports a band on the foot only which is a nice touch. It is predominantly black and gives the cigar a nice bold flair.

This torpedo is very nice looking with a consistent brown color wrapper. There are two prominent veins showing but the seams are perfect throughout this tightly packaged cigar. As I smell the foot I get a nice tingle of spice right away that made me sneeze.

Upon toasting the foot I couldn’t get the cigar lit properly. I attribute this to the wide 64 ring gauge. After some more tries with the torch lighter I was set.

The initial draw was too tight for me which was nuisance since this is such a husky cigar. The burn line is horribly wavy too. In regards to the taste I am getting a peppery earthy flavor. So far this just an okay cigar for me.

I am about 20 minutes into the Cain Nub Maduro and things have picked up. The burn line has settle down and it is burning a lot better. This a slow and deep cigar that shouldn’t be rushed. The power is more apparent now and there is no denying its full body; you should definitely a good-sized meal before this cigar. I ate before I sat down with this Cain and I started to get hungry mid smoke. In true Nub fashion the ash is holding on strong thus far.

For a smoke this strong it has been very smooth ride. I am now getting a milky finish on the palette as I exhale out. Additionally I haven’t had any coughing fits. The tightness on the draw has eased up and I don’t have to pull so hard to get a decent amount of smoke. That peppery earthy taste has been consistent too. Unfortunately the ash fell on me almost two-thirds into this cigar. That mishap shouldn’t be taken an as indication of the construction, as this cigar has burned well down to the nub.

The Cain Nub Habano is a unique experience. The ligero makes for a powerful but controlled cigar. If you enjoy full-bodied smokes, then the Cain Nub Habano will fit the bill nicely. Sam Leccia should be proud.
