In the world of stogies, no cigar is more coveted and sought after than the Cuban Cohiba. Meaning tobacco in Taíno, Cohiba is the most popular cigar brand in the world. With the United States embargo in place since 1960, Cuban cigars have reached a mythical status of sorts.
This forbidden fruit is very difficult to obtain in the states so when any smoker comes across the real deal, you better believe it will be a special occasion.
Recently I came across some authentic Cohiba Robustos and needless to say I was very excited. I did some further research and found out that ideally Cuban cigars should sit in the humidor from anywhere to six months to a year. Well I was able to hold out for about two months before I gave in and lit one up.
At first inspection this is a really good-looking cigar. It has the trademark triple cap seal on the head and is pretty firm throughout. The foot is tightly packed too. I took a sniff and I got a spiced tobacco scent that almost made me sneeze.
Upon toasting the foot, I got tasty creamy notes. Unfortunately the burn has already gotten off to a bad start. The burn line peeled back a bit which is disappointing for such a pricey import. Nevertheless I tried to correct it with some touch ups from my lighter.
Five minutes into this smoke I am really digging the flavor profile. Things are right in a medium zone as far as strength but it is really controlled and smooth. The creamy taste isn’t as apparent before but I do get a slight coating on my tongue as I exhale each puff of smoke. The ash is a dull grey and is somewhat flaky which is not what I was expecting from such a praised brand.
Going into the second third things are going well. I am really enjoying the taste. Additionally I am getting ample amount of smoke on each pull. The construction issues have shown their face again with some uneven burning. Annoying.
As I round out the final third of this Cohiba I have to admit this is a fine smoke burn problems aside. While it isn’t complex with profile changes, it is a rich and very enjoyable medium body cigar. It will land full on your palate but will not overpower you and the taste was smooth throughout.
Was it worth the hefty price tag? I would say no. Maybe this cigar was still young and needed more rest but I can only judge what I had. There are many non Cuban cigars that will provide a great smoke for half the price. I guess my quest for the glorious Cuban continues.
This is a good smoke but I agree that there are other fine cigars you can get at a better rate.
