While I’m more VIP than red carpet, the 63rd Emmy Awards was still a big night for men’s black tie fashion in Hollywood. Let us look back on the style wins, losses and draws.

The staple tuxedo was in full bloom tonight and rightfully so. I applaud Jeremy Piven for going left with a long full tie. Notice how his peak lapel notch one button jacket accentuates his shoulders while still giving him a slim profile. The white pocket square adds that last bit of detail to make the look complete.

James Todd Smith AKA LL Cool J disappointed me by adding a soft hat to his attire. While the white bow tie and two button blazer make him look sharp, the hat totally takes away from the outfit. He could easily be mistaken for a chauffeur this way.

Actor David Boreanaz finessed a navy blue shawl collar tuxedo with great ease. The black buttons on the dress shirt screams V.I.P. I’m not a fan of the stripe on the pants though – very much a hired help feel.

There is a lot going on with Joel McHale’s outfit and most of it is bad. The powder blue isn’t a complimentary color for him and the shawl collar jacket seems to be a size to small as the button is pressing against his torso.

For an older gentleman, Marty Scorsese got it right. The oval shawl collar adorns him well and the satin bow tie with the bold frames are great touches.

Cory Monteith looks very stiff in this three piece tuxedo. Sometimes a vest can do more harm than good as seen here.

Ian Somerhalder looks very calm and cool in this one button shawl collar tuxedo. The fit is right and the handmade bow tie gives the suit a nice character. Well done.

And for best dressed the Emmy goes to Ty Burrell. Ty looks very dashing in his one button tux with peak lapel features. The bow tie is big enough for the shirt’s wide collar but small enough to not look out of place. This tuxedo compliments his tall frame without forcing the issue.
