2027 BMW X5 Enters A New Era With First Electric iX5

The 2027 BMW X5 is stepping into a new chapter, and the headline is bigger than a familiar luxury SUV getting a redesign. BMW has unveiled the next generation of the X5 family, bringing a sharper design, a tech-heavy cabin, and the broadest powertrain strategy the nameplate has ever seen.

The move also introduces the first all-electric BMW iX5, giving one of the brand’s most important SUVs a battery-powered future without abandoning the traditional gas and plug-in hybrid buyers who helped make the X5 a global staple.

The 2027 BMW X5 Becomes A Multi-Powertrain Luxury SUV
The new BMW X5 family is being positioned as a true power-of-choice platform. The lineup will include combustion models with 48V mild-hybrid technology, a plug-in hybrid, the fully electric iX5 60 xDrive, and eventually a hydrogen-powered iX5 Hydrogen model.
That makes this more than a normal model refresh. BMW is using the X5 as a bridge between its current luxury SUV business and the future of the brand’s electrified portfolio. For buyers, it means the X5 will continue to serve different types of luxury SUV customers, whether they want long-range gas performance, partial electric driving, or a full EV experience.
BMW says the rollout begins with the X5 40 xDrive in October 2026, followed by the rear-wheel-drive X5 40, X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid, and iX5 60 xDrive in the first quarter of 2027. Additional versions, including a V8-powered M Performance model, are scheduled to arrive later in 2027.

The First Electric BMW iX5 Brings Serious Range
The most important addition is the BMW iX5 60 xDrive. As the first battery-electric X5, it gives BMW a direct answer for luxury SUV buyers who want EV range without moving away from the size, presence, and familiarity of the X5.
BMW lists the iX5 60 xDrive with an estimated 435 miles of range, sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology, an 800V electrical architecture, and a standard NACS charging port. The electric model uses a dual-motor setup with a combined 570 hp and 593 lb-ft of torque, helping it move from 0 to 60 mph in an estimated 4.4 seconds.
Charging is another major part of the story. BMW says the iX5 can support DC fast charging at up to 460 kW, allowing a 10 to 80 percent charge in 22 minutes under ideal conditions. The brand also says drivers can add an estimated 170 miles of range in about 10 minutes.
The iX5 also includes bidirectional charging capability, allowing the SUV to power devices, support a home during an outage, or provide energy to another electric vehicle.

Spartanburg Gives The X5 A U.S. Hook
The world premiere of the new X5 and iX5 takes place at BMW Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, a fitting location considering the plant has built the X5 since the model’s original debut in 1999.
That detail gives the launch real U.S. weight. BMW says the iX5 will become the first all-electric vehicle produced at Plant Spartanburg, expanding the role of the facility as the brand’s home for Sports Activity Vehicles. It also connects the new X5 to BMW’s broader U.S. manufacturing footprint at a time when luxury automakers are still balancing electrification, consumer choice, and local production.

Neue Klasse Tech Moves Into The Cabin
Inside, the 2027 BMW X5 leans heavily into BMW’s Neue Klasse technology language. The cabin features BMW Panoramic iDrive with BMW Operating System X, BMW Panoramic Vision across the lower windshield, a 17.9-inch free-cut Central Display, and an available passenger screen.
The result is a cockpit that feels less like a traditional dashboard and more like a modern luxury command center. BMW is also bringing new personalization features, over-the-air update capability, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an enhanced BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with Amazon Alexa+ AI technology.
Luxury details are not being pushed aside either. The new X5 can be equipped with slate and crystal interior applications, available BMW Individual Merino Leather, multifunction seats with ventilation and massage, automatic doors with Soft Close, a panoramic glass roof, and an available Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System with Dolby Atmos.

A Sharper Design For BMW’s Signature SUV
On the outside, the new X5 keeps the broad stance and upright presence that have defined the model, but BMW has cleaned up the surfaces and sharpened the front end. The SUV receives vertically aligned BMW kidney Iconic Glow lighting, new double-X light icons, slimmer rear lighting, and available wheel sizes up to 23 inches.
The side profile is cleaner as well, thanks to new BMW Winglet door handles that sit within the B- and C-pillars. The overall effect is still unmistakably X5, but with a more futuristic and reduced look that brings it closer to BMW’s next design era.
Pricing starts at $69,800 for the X5 40, $72,100 for the X5 40 xDrive, $77,500 for the X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid, and $79,800 for the iX5 60 xDrive, before the $1,450 destination and handling charge.
For BMW, the new X5 is not just another luxury SUV update. It is the model that shows how the brand plans to move forward without forcing every customer into the same lane. Gas, plug-in hybrid, electric, and eventually hydrogen all live under the same X5 umbrella.
That makes the 2027 BMW X5 one of the most important luxury SUV launches of the year, and the first electric iX5 gives the nameplate the kind of future-facing edge that makes this reveal feel bigger than a redesign.
