Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Rye Is 14 Years In The Making

Fourteen years after introducing its celebrated Double Oaked Bourbon, Woodford Reserve is bringing its signature secondary barrel maturation process to an entirely new expression. The Kentucky distillery has unveiled Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Rye, extending one of its most recognizable whiskey-making techniques into rye whiskey for the first time. The new release combines the spice-driven foundation of Kentucky straight rye with the rich, toasted characteristics that have become synonymous with the Double Oaked name.
Bottled at 90.4 proof (45.2% ABV), the whiskey carries a suggested retail price of $54.99 for a 750ml bottle and begins rolling out nationwide in November 2026. More importantly, Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Rye is joining the brand’s permanent portfolio rather than arriving as a limited-edition experiment.

How Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Rye Is Made
The defining characteristic of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Rye is its additional maturation process, which builds upon the foundation of the distillery’s existing Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey.
The whiskey begins with Woodford Reserve’s traditional rye mash bill, consisting of 53% rye, 33% corn and 14% malted barley. This grain composition places rye at the forefront while incorporating a substantial percentage of corn, creating a foundation that balances the grain’s naturally assertive character with the influence of traditional Kentucky whiskey production.
Following its initial maturation, the fully matured rye is transferred into a second, specially prepared new oak barrel. Unlike a conventional barrel, this vessel is heavily toasted and lightly charred, allowing the whiskey to extract additional flavors from the wood during its secondary aging period.
Toasting and charring serve different purposes in whiskey production. Toasting gradually heats the wood, transforming compounds within the oak that can contribute flavors associated with caramel, vanilla and baking spices. Charring exposes the interior to more intense heat, creating a carbonized surface that further influences the spirit as it matures.
Woodford Reserve allows the rye to spend up to 12 additional months in this second barrel. The result is a whiskey designed to retain its underlying rye character while developing the deeper oak-driven flavors associated with the distillery’s Double Oaked collection.

A Different Expression of the Double Oaked Flavor Profile
Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Rye introduces a new interpretation of the flavor profile that helped establish Double Oaked Bourbon as a distinctive offering within the brand’s portfolio.
According to Woodford Reserve, the new expression features notes of roasted espresso, caramel, lemon custard and candied pecan, accompanied by a rich mahogany appearance. Those tasting notes suggest an emphasis on roasted and caramelized characteristics, with citrus and nutty elements adding further complexity.
The additional barrel maturation is central to that development. While rye whiskey is commonly associated with peppery spice, herbal characteristics and a more pronounced grain profile, extended contact with specially toasted oak can introduce another dimension to the finished spirit.
For Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall, the release represents an opportunity to apply an established production technique to a different whiskey category. Rather than attempting to recreate Double Oaked Bourbon with a new label, Woodford Reserve is using rye’s distinct grain composition as the starting point for its next Double Oaked expression.
That distinction is important. The whiskey’s flavor profile is not determined by its finishing barrel alone, but by the interaction between its original maturation, underlying mash bill and additional exposure to oak.

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Bourbon vs. Double Oaked Rye
The arrival of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Rye naturally invites comparisons with the Double Oaked Bourbon that introduced the concept in 2012. Although both expressions share a secondary barrel maturation process, their different grain compositions provide distinct foundations.
Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Bourbon begins with the distillery’s bourbon recipe, which uses corn as its dominant grain. Its established flavor profile emphasizes rich vanilla, caramel, chocolate, toasted oak and fruit characteristics, reflecting the combination of its bourbon mash bill and additional barrel maturation.
Double Oaked Rye, meanwhile, begins with a mash bill containing 53% rye. That higher concentration of rye provides a different grain character before the whiskey enters its second barrel. Woodford Reserve’s published tasting notes also highlight roasted espresso, lemon custard and candied pecan, offering a different collection of flavor descriptors from those associated with the bourbon.
Both expressions are bottled at 90.4 proof, and both rely on heavily toasted, lightly charred second barrels to develop additional complexity. The comparison ultimately comes down to the whiskey beneath the oak influence. Bourbon and rye bring different grain profiles into the same finishing process, making Double Oaked Rye an expansion of the concept rather than a direct replacement for the original.
For enthusiasts already familiar with Double Oaked Bourbon, the new rye provides an opportunity to explore how the same barrel treatment interacts with another style of American whiskey.

A Permanent Addition to Woodford Reserve’s Whiskey Portfolio
Perhaps the most significant aspect of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Rye is its position within the distillery’s broader lineup.
Whiskey producers frequently introduce experimental finishes and specialty releases in limited quantities, making availability an important consideration for enthusiasts interested in trying something new. Woodford Reserve is taking a different approach by establishing Double Oaked Rye as a permanent expression with national distribution.
The decision arrives 14 years after the introduction of Double Oaked Bourbon, which helped make secondary oak maturation one of the brand’s defining production techniques.
At a suggested retail price of $54.99, Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Rye enters the market at a relatively approachable price for a whiskey featuring an additional maturation stage. Early retail listings, including a $59.99 preorder through Wooden Cork, demonstrate that actual prices may vary depending on the retailer and location. The new expression is scheduled for nationwide distribution beginning in November 2026.
While individual retailers may receive inventory at different times, its permanent status gives the expression an opportunity to develop an audience beyond its initial launch.
A New Chapter for Woodford Reserve Double Oaked
Fourteen years after Double Oaked Bourbon established a new chapter for Woodford Reserve, the distillery is extending that approach into rye whiskey. The combination of a rye-forward mash bill, additional maturation in specially prepared oak barrels and a permanent place within the portfolio makes Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Rye a meaningful addition to the Double Oaked family. As the national rollout begins in November, the new expression gives whiskey enthusiasts another way to explore the influence of secondary oak maturation through the distinctive foundation of Kentucky straight rye.
