The Rafa Nadal Assouline Book Spans Three Decades

Assouline describes the project as the first comprehensive visual biography created with Nadal’s full participation. Rather than simply compiling match photography and statistics, the Rafa Nadal Assouline book traces nearly three decades of his life, beginning with his childhood in Mallorca and extending through his historic tennis career.

Readers are taken beyond center court into the locker room, the Rafa Nadal Academy and quieter moments away from competition. Many of the photographs were sourced from the private collections of Nadal, his family and members of his inner circle, giving the book an access point that separates it from the typical career retrospective.

The Rafa Nadal Assouline book is written by veteran tennis journalist and 60 Minutes correspondent Jon Wertheim, whose previous work includes Strokes of Genius, his book about Nadal and Roger Federer’s legendary 2008 Wimbledon final.

Federer also contributes reflections to the new Assouline release alongside King Felipe VI of Spain, Nadal’s wife Mery Perelló, his father Sebastián Nadal, his uncle and former coach Toni Nadal and longtime coach Carlos Moyá. Together, their perspectives help frame Nadal as something more than the player responsible for one of the most decorated résumés in tennis history.

That résumé remains ridiculous. Nadal retired with 22 Grand Slam singles championships, including an unmatched 14 French Open titles at Roland-Garros.

The Rafa Nadal Assouline Book Ultimate Edition Weighs 20 Pounds

The numbers surrounding Nadal’s career are impressive, but the specifications surrounding this book are fairly outrageous too. The Rafa Nadal Ultimate Edition measures approximately 16 by 19 inches and arrives housed inside a hand-bound linen clamshell. Its reddish-orange color treatment was inspired by the clay of Court Philippe-Chatrier at Roland-Garros, the venue most closely associated with Nadal’s dominance.

Inside is the hardcover 336-page book featuring 353 illustrations. Assouline also includes a pair of white gloves and an exclusive Rafa Nadal canvas tote with the package.

And because apparently setting a 20-pound book on your coffee table is now a logistical operation, Assouline is offering white-glove delivery and installation for Ultimate Edition purchases within the continental United States. We have officially reached the point where your tennis book can have movers.

The Signed Rafa Nadal Edition Costs $3,000

There are three ways into the collection. The standard Classic Edition costs $120, while the much larger Ultimate Edition jumps to $1,200. At the very top sits the Signed Ultimate Edition for $3,000, with Nadal’s signature included on a limited number of copies.

Assouline has not disclosed exactly how many signed versions will be produced, making this a case where “limited” is about as specific as we can responsibly get.

Both the presentation and price make the Ultimate version feel closer to a collectible design object than a conventional sports book. That distinction becomes even clearer through its connection to Roland-Garros.

The Rafa Nadal Assouline Book Classic Edition opens with a photograph of a young Nadal during his 2005 French Open debut, the tournament where the then-19-year-old would capture the first Grand Slam championship of his career. The Ultimate Edition instead begins with a 2012 photograph of Nadal’s blistered hands holding his seventh Roland-Garros trophy.

The clay-colored case, then, is more than some clever packaging choice. It references the surface and venue that ultimately became inseparable from Nadal’s legacy.

Preorders for the Rafa Nadal Assouline book are open now through Assouline. The publisher lists October 13, 2026 as the estimated shipping date, with the collection also arriving at Assouline boutiques on the same date.

For most Nadal fans, the $120 Classic Edition is probably the realistic entry point. Collectors looking for something significantly more extravagant can choose the $1,200 Ultimate Edition, while the $3,000 signed version sits at the top of the range.

Nadal’s career already supplied enough accomplishments to fill several books, from 22 Grand Slam titles to an unmatched 14 championships on the clay at Roland-Garros. What makes Assouline’s approach interesting is everything surrounding those numbers: private photographs, contributions from the people closest to him and a physical presentation designed around the court where his legend was built.
