Black Pearl: Tribute to the Birthplace of LOUIS XIII takes its inspiration directly from Le Grollet, a historic cellar that has long played an important role in the House’s story. For the release, LOUIS XIII Cellar Master Baptiste Loiseau selected a rare eau-de-vie from the House’s historic collection of demijohns. Eau-de-vie, meaning “water of life,” refers to the distilled grape spirit that ultimately becomes Cognac. The selected spirit was then incorporated into a single tierçon, the traditional French oak casks associated with the maturation of LOUIS XIII.

The resulting blend LOUIS XIII Black Pearl is intended to capture some of the character and atmosphere Loiseau experiences when tasting inside Le Grollet. But recreating the liquid was only part of the equation.

The Cooling Cellar Changes How Black Pearl Is Served

Every LOUIS XIII Black Pearl decanter comes with a bespoke Cooling Cellar designed specifically for the release. The system allows the Cognac to rest at a temperature as low as approximately 13°C, or 55.4°F, bringing it closer to the cool environment of Le Grollet before it reaches the glass.

That temperature becomes part of the tasting ritual. Black Pearl is poured cool and then gradually allowed to approach room temperature. As the Cognac warms, different elements of its aromatic and sensory profile become more expressive. Instead of treating temperature as an afterthought, LOUIS XIII has made it part of how the Cognac is intended to be experienced.
