The 2027 BMW i3 Is An Electric 3 Series With Up To 440 Miles Of Range

The BMW i3 is back, but forget the quirky electric hatchback that wore the badge more than a decade ago. The 2027 BMW i3 has transformed the i3 into something much more familiar: an all-electric sports sedan built around the formula that made the 3 Series one of the brand’s defining cars.
The 2027 BMW i3 will arrive in the United States with up to 440 miles of estimated driving range, while the launch i3 50 xDrive produces 463 horsepower. It is also the second model from BMW’s Neue Klasse generation, bringing the automaker’s latest battery, charging, software and interior technology into a proper sports sedan. In other words, this isn’t the i3 you remember.

The 2027 BMW i3 Isn’t the i3 You Remember
BMW first used the i3 name on the unconventional electric hatchback introduced more than a decade ago. With its compact footprint, carbon-fiber construction and futuristic styling, that car deliberately looked and felt different from traditional BMWs.
The new i3 takes almost the opposite approach. Rather than creating another standalone EV design, BMW has reimagined the i3 as the first fully electric member of the 3 Series family. It has the proportions of a traditional sports sedan, with a long wheelbase, short overhangs and a wide stance. The name might be familiar, but the vehicle wearing it has fundamentally changed.

The 2027 BMW i3 Targets Up to 440 Miles of Range
Range could become one of the biggest reasons shoppers pay attention to the new i3. BMW estimates the 2027 BMW i3 can deliver up to 440 miles of driving range when fully charged. That figure remains preliminary and is based on BMW testing using EPA test-procedure standards, so it should not be confused with a finalized EPA rating.
Still, 440 miles would give the i3 serious long-distance credentials. BMW pairs its new battery technology with an 800-volt electrical architecture capable of DC fast-charging at up to 400 kW. The company has also designed the i3 with bidirectional charging capability, including Vehicle-to-Load, Vehicle-to-Home and Vehicle-to-Grid functionality.

The BMW i3 50 xDrive Packs 463 Horsepower
BMW isn’t positioning its new electric sedan as an efficiency appliance. The first version will be the BMW i3 50 xDrive, which uses electric motors at both the front and rear axles to produce a combined 463 horsepower and 476 pound-feet of torque. The dual-motor configuration also provides all-wheel drive.
Underneath it is BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, including new cylindrical battery cells and a structural battery design intended to improve energy density while reducing weight. BMW has also developed a new high-performance computer called the Heart of Joy to manage functions including the drivetrain, braking, energy recuperation and steering. The technology is new. The objective sounds very familiar: make the i3 drive like a BMW.

Neue Klasse Technology Changes More Than the Powertrain
Neue Klasse represents much more than BMW swapping a gasoline engine for batteries. The company has redesigned much of the vehicle’s underlying electrical and software architecture around four high-performance computers responsible for areas including driving dynamics, automated driving, infotainment and comfort functions.
BMW says the new setup offers more than 20 times the computing power of previous systems while simplifying the electronics architecture. The significance extends beyond the i3. Technologies developed for Neue Klasse are expected to spread across future BMW models, making the electric sedan an early look at where the larger brand is headed.

Inside the New BMW i3 Sedan
The cabin might make that transition even more obvious. BMW’s Panoramic iDrive places information across a display positioned near the base of the windshield, keeping important driving information closer to the driver’s natural line of sight. A large central touchscreen handles additional vehicle and infotainment functions.
The traditional BMW driver-focused philosophy is still present, but the execution is decidedly more digital and minimalist. Standard sport seats offer electric adjustment, while more aggressively bolstered M Sport seats will also be available. Overall, the interior feels less like BMW added screens to an existing dashboard and more like the company reconsidered how the cockpit should work for its next generation of vehicles.

The 2027 BMW i3 Still Looks Like a 3 Series
BMW has also resisted the temptation to make the i3 look bizarre simply because it is electric. The sedan gets classic BMW proportions interpreted through the cleaner Neue Klasse design language. Up front, the kidney grille and four-eye lighting signature have been reworked into a more integrated graphic treatment, while the nose leans forward for a subtle nod to the shark-nose BMWs of decades past.
Flared wheel arches give the car a planted stance, and horizontal rear lighting emphasizes its width. There is plenty here that signals a new design era, but the overall shape remains recognizably BMW. That may be one of the i3’s strongest design decisions.

How Much Will the 2027 BMW i3 Cost?
BMW has not announced official U.S. pricing for the 2027 BMW i3 yet. The i3 50 xDrive will serve as the launch model, with additional variants expected later. Until BMW confirms the MSRP and destination charge, any specific starting price should be treated as an estimate rather than an official figure.
Given the performance, range and technology BMW is packing into the car, pricing will be one of the biggest remaining pieces of the puzzle.
When Does the 2027 BMW i3 Go on Sale?
Production of the new i3 began at BMW’s Munich plant in August 2026 as the company continues transforming the facility around Neue Klasse electric vehicles. For American shoppers, BMW says the fully electric i3 Sedan will become available in the United States in 2027, with additional model variants following later.
The Electric 3 Series Has Finally Arrived
The importance of the new i3 isn’t simply that BMW built another electric vehicle. This is the 3 Series formula—one of the foundations of the BMW brand—being carried into the electric era.
For years, automakers often treated EVs as separate products that needed their own styling, identity and sometimes even their own sub-brands. The 2027 BMW i3 suggests that separation is beginning to disappear.
BMW isn’t asking buyers to choose between the idea of a traditional sports sedan and an electric BMW in quite the same way anymore. With the i3, those two identities are finally becoming one.
