2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV Debuts With 1,153 HP and Supercar Performance

Mercedes-AMG is pushing the boundaries of what a luxury performance SUV can deliver with the introduction of the 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV. The German automaker’s latest creation combines the practicality of a full-size SUV with the performance credentials of a supercar, including an astonishing 1,153 horsepower and a manufacturer-estimated 0–60 mph time of just 2.4 seconds in its range-topping GT 63 configuration.
Beyond the impressive numbers, the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV represents a significant milestone for the performance division. For the first time in its 59-year history, AMG has developed a full-size SUV entirely in-house rather than modifying an existing Mercedes-Benz model.
Built on the company’s new AMG.EA electric architecture, the all-electric SUV introduces advanced battery technology, sophisticated suspension engineering and a distinctive driving experience designed to bring AMG’s performance heritage into a new era.

Three Mercedes-AMG GT SUV Models, Up to 1,153 Horsepower
The 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV will be offered in three configurations, each delivering a different level of performance. The entry-level GT 53 SUV features two permanently excited synchronous electric motors, one positioned at each axle, producing a combined 536 horsepower. Moving up the lineup, the GT 55 SUV employs three advanced axial-flux electric motors generating 805 horsepower.
At the top sits the GT 63 SUV, which develops a remarkable 1,153 horsepower and 1,475 lb-ft of torque from its three-motor drivetrain. Mercedes-AMG estimates the flagship can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds with a one-foot rollout and reach an electronically limited top speed of 168 mph. The GT 63 can also reach 124 mph from a standstill in an estimated 6.8 seconds.

What makes the technology particularly interesting is the use of axial-flux motors. Compared with conventional electric motors, these units feature a compact design and exceptionally high power density. Mercedes-AMG has engineered the system to deliver repeatable performance rather than focusing exclusively on brief bursts of acceleration.
In fact, the flagship can sustain up to 711 horsepower of continuous output, demonstrating the level of engineering behind its extraordinary peak performance.

Formula 1-Inspired Battery Technology and Ultra-Fast Charging
While acceleration will undoubtedly attract attention, the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV’s battery technology may be equally significant. The vehicle uses an advanced 800-volt electrical architecture featuring individually cooled cylindrical battery cells. Drawing on principles from Formula 1, the system circulates a specialized cooling fluid around each cell to maintain consistent temperatures under demanding driving conditions.
This approach helps the battery deliver sustained power while improving charging performance. The GT 53 SUV receives a 106-kWh battery capable of DC fast charging at up to 600 kW. Meanwhile, the GT 55 and GT 63 models feature larger 128-kWh batteries supporting charging speeds of up to 710 kW.
Under ideal conditions, Mercedes-AMG claims the larger battery can charge from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 12 minutes. The automaker also estimates that drivers can replenish roughly 280 miles of WLTP-rated driving range in just 10 minutes using a sufficiently powerful charging station. Those figures come with an important distinction: WLTP estimates are based on European testing standards. Official EPA-certified driving range figures for the United States have not yet been announced.
Actual charging speeds will also depend on charger capabilities, battery temperature and other operating conditions.

A Mercedes-AMG GT SUV Designed to Handle Like a Sports Car
Delivering supercar acceleration in an SUV is one thing. Making that vehicle feel composed through corners presents an entirely different engineering challenge. To address this, Mercedes-AMG developed its ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL+ suspension system, which incorporates active pitch and roll stabilization. The technology is designed to minimize unwanted body movement during acceleration, braking and cornering while maintaining comfort during everyday driving.
The SUV also features rear-axle steering and fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, allowing power distribution and vehicle response to adjust according to driving conditions. Visually, the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV adopts an aggressive stance characterized by pronounced shoulders, a wide track and a relatively low roofline.
Aerodynamics also play an important role. An active roof spoiler and the automaker’s Airpanel system help manage airflow, balancing efficiency with the cooling and stability requirements of a high-performance electric vehicle. The overall approach reflects AMG’s effort to give its first purpose-built SUV driving characteristics that extend beyond straight-line acceleration.

Inside the 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV
Inside, the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV combines a technology-focused cabin with the sporting character expected from the Affalterbach-based performance division. The driver-oriented dashboard features a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster alongside a 14-inch central touchscreen. An optional 14-inch passenger display provides additional functionality for the front-seat passenger.
The latest MBUX infotainment system operates on Mercedes-Benz’s new MB.OS platform, bringing integrated artificial intelligence and customizable displays to the driving experience. Performance-oriented controls also take center stage. The AMG RACE ENGINEER system allows drivers to tailor various aspects of the vehicle’s response, including handling characteristics and traction behavior.

One particularly distinctive feature is AMGFORCE Sport+, which incorporates simulated gear changes, seat vibrations and reproduced engine sounds inspired by AMG’s V8 and six-cylinder powerplants. Although the GT SUV is fully electric, Mercedes-AMG is clearly attempting to preserve some of the sensory qualities traditionally associated with its combustion-powered performance vehicles.
Whether drivers prefer those artificial sensations will ultimately come down to personal taste, but their inclusion demonstrates how seriously AMG is approaching the emotional side of electric performance.
The cabin also offers extensive personalization through the MANUFAKTUR program, including exclusive exterior colors, upholstery choices and interior trim combinations.

When Will the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV Go on Sale?
Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV will arrive at U.S. dealerships during the summer of 2027. All three models—the GT 53, GT 55 and GT 63—are expected to form part of the initial American lineup. Official U.S. pricing has not yet been announced, and EPA-certified driving range estimates remain pending.
With electric SUVs becoming increasingly powerful and technologically sophisticated, the new Mercedes-AMG GT SUV enters a competitive segment where outright acceleration is only one part of the luxury performance equation. For Mercedes-AMG, however, the larger significance lies in the vehicle’s origins. Developed from the ground up on AMG’s dedicated electric architecture, the GT SUV gives the performance division greater control over how its vehicles are engineered, from their powertrains and battery systems to their handling characteristics.
The result is an ambitious new chapter for AMG, one that aims to deliver the practicality of a luxury SUV without abandoning the performance identity that made the brand famous.
