Toyota Returns To The Supercar Conversation With The GR GT

Toyota has spent the last several years rebuilding its performance credentials from the ground up. The GR86 made accessible sports cars exciting again. The GR Corolla introduced rally-bred aggression to the hot-hatch category. The Supra returned one of the company’s most recognizable nameplates to the road. The Toyota GR GT, however, represents something far more ambitious.
This is not another addition to the Gazoo Racing lineup. It is a declaration that Toyota is ready to build a flagship performance car again—and compete at a level it has not approached since the Lexus LFA.
A Flagship Built To Carry Toyota’s Knowledge Forward
Toyota officially introduced the GR GT in December 2025 before bringing the uncamouflaged car to the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed for its first dynamic appearance in the United Kingdom. Goodwood provided the spectacle, but the larger story is what Toyota intends the car to represent.
The company places the Toyota GR GT in a direct lineage with the Toyota 2000GT and Lexus LFA—two vehicles that demonstrated what could happen when Toyota’s engineers were given the freedom to pursue something extraordinary.
Toyota describes that connection through the Japanese tradition of Shikinen Sengu, in which essential knowledge and craftsmanship are passed from one generation to the next through continual renewal. Veteran engineers who worked on the LFA helped transfer their experience to the younger team developing the GR GT, preserving specialized performance-car expertise while adapting it for a new era.
That philosophy gives the Toyota GR GT significance beyond its horsepower figure. It is not simply meant to be fast. It is intended to ensure Toyota still possesses the people, processes and institutional knowledge required to create a true halo car.

The Hybrid V8 Is Only The Beginning
At the center of the Toyota GR GT is a newly developed 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 paired with a single electric motor. Toyota is targeting more than 650 PS—approximately 641 horsepower—and more than 850 Nm, or roughly 627 pound-feet, of system torque. Power is delivered exclusively to the rear wheels through a new eight-speed automatic transmission integrated with the electric motor inside a rear-mounted transaxle.
The compact, short-stroke V8 uses a hot-V configuration that places its two turbochargers between the cylinder banks. A dry-sump lubrication system allows the engine to sit lower in the chassis, supporting the car’s extremely low profile and center of gravity.
A carbon-fiber-reinforced torque tube connects the front-mounted engine to the rear transaxle. Toyota also positioned the battery, fuel tank and other heavy components to create a targeted 45:55 front-to-rear weight distribution. The electric motor is therefore not positioned as a replacement for the V8 experience. It works as another component within the performance system, helping deliver immediate response and uninterrupted acceleration while allowing Toyota to retain the sound and character of a combustion-powered flagship.
Toyota Designed The GR GT From The Air Backward
Rather than styling the exterior first and attempting to make the aerodynamics work afterward, Toyota reversed the traditional process. Aerodynamic engineers—including members with experience developing the company’s World Endurance Championship race cars—first established the ideal shape for managing airflow, cooling and stability. Exterior designers then transformed that engineering model into a production-ready form.
The result is a dramatically proportioned two-seater measuring just 1,195 millimeters, or approximately 47 inches, tall. Its long hood, compact cockpit, enormous rear wing and aggressive air channels were developed around a targeted top speed exceeding 320 km/h, or approximately 199 mph. Beneath the bodywork sits Toyota’s first all-aluminum vehicle structure. Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic is used selectively for areas including the hood, roof and rear bulkhead, helping the company target a curb weight below 1,750 kilograms, or approximately 3,858 pounds.
New low-mounted double-wishbone suspension systems use forged aluminum arms at both ends. The Toyota GR GT also receives model-specific Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, equipment that makes its track intentions impossible to misunderstand.

Developed With The Driver At The Center
The Toyota GR GT is dubbed a “racing machine built for the road,” but the company has not designed it exclusively for professional drivers or controlled track environments. Chairman Akio Toyoda—known within the company by his racing persona, Morizo—worked alongside professional drivers, gentleman drivers and Toyota engineers throughout development. Their feedback influenced the driving position, visibility, control placement and the way the car responds near its limits.
Toyota also tested the car on public roads and at circuits including Fuji Speedway and the Nürburgring. The objective was to produce something that could remain approachable and communicative during ordinary driving while delivering significantly more capability when pushed.
That balance may ultimately become the Toyota GR GT’s defining quality. Its specifications place it in modern supercar territory, but its purpose reaches further. The Toyota GR GT is Toyota’s attempt to preserve the craft of building emotionally compelling flagship cars while demonstrating how that craft can evolve through hybrid technology.
Production is being targeted for approximately 2027. Pricing has not been officially announced. Whenever it arrives, the Toyota GR GT will carry expectations created by both the 2000GT and LFA. Toyota is not merely reviving a nameplate this time. It is rebuilding a tradition.
